Archbishop of San Francisco: ‘To Begin With the Obvious: Nancy Pelosi Does Not Speak for the Catholic Church’

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francsico issued a statement on Thursday sharply criticizing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.)—who represents San Francisco—for attacking Catholics who voted for President Donald Trump to advance the pro-life cause of protecting unborn babies from abortion.

“To begin with the obvious: Nancy Pelosi does not speak for the Catholic Church,” said the archbishop.

“She speaks as a high-level important government leader, and as a private citizen,” he said. “And on the question of the equal dignity of human life in the womb, she also speaks in direct contradiction to a fundamental human right that Catholic teaching has consistently championed for 2,000 years.”

“Speaker Pelosi has chosen this week to impugn the motives of millions of Catholics and others for choosing to make voting on the issue of abortion their priority and accuses them of ‘selling out democracy,’” said the archbishop. “This is not the language of unity and healing.  She owes these voters an apology.”

The archbishop went on to say that someone who favors abortion—which Pelosi does—cannot be a “Catholic in good conscience.”

“No Catholic in good conscience can favor abortion,” said Archbishop Cordileone. Read more here

Vatican convicts former banking chief in multimillion-euro embezzlement scheme

The Vatican’s criminal tribunal convicted a former Vatican banking chief and his lawyer, who together were accused of embezzling more than 30 million euros from the sale of properties owned by the Holy See.

Angel Caloia, 81, and attorney Gabriele Liuzzo, 97, were sentenced to nearly nine years in prison each, according to the Associated Press. The court awarded roughly 23 million euros in damages to the Vatican bank, the Institute of Religious Works.

Both Caloia and Liuzzo have maintained their innocence.

Prosecutors said a scheme of embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and money-laundering took place between 2001 and 2008. The suspects were accused of selling 29 properties at undervalued prices to offshore companies that then sold the properties at value, kicking back the difference to Caloia and Liuzzo.

Experts appointed by the Vatican court estimated that the sales cost the bank roughly 34 million euros and that Caloia and Liuzzo pocketed as much as 19 million euros for themselves.

Caloia’s lawyers said that they would appeal the sentence, arguing that Caloia had been acquitted of some of the accusations regarding “the majority of the properties.” The lawyers said that the sentencing took place “in a climate that was on the whole unfavorable to the defense” and criticized the Vatican’s “outdated legal system,” which they said fails to give defendants the same rights and protections that modern legal systems afford. Pope Francis Muzzles American Catholic Bishops Preaching Against Biden’s Anti-Catholic Agenda

Officials from the Vatican held back a statement from the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB), which warned Catholics that the incoming Biden administration holds an extreme anti-Catholic policy agenda. The USCCB statement has now been released, but only after Pope Francis came out with his own message for President Joe Biden.

Conference President Archbishop Jose Gomez did not mince words in the USCCB release, discussing the church’s position on abortion, gender, and religious liberty, and warning that the Biden administration’s policies would advance “moral evils” on several fronts.

According to “The Pillar,” sources in the Vatican Secretariat of State, others close to the U.S. bishops conference, and sources among the U.S. bishops confirmed that the statement was being held under embargo after an intervention from the Vatican Secretariat of State, hours before it was due to be released Wednesday morning.

Those who allegedly objected to the release include Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, and Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago, among other unnamed bishops.

Biden and Harris, who plan to reverse the Mexico City policy and the Hyde Amendment to reinstate taxpayer funding of abortion both here and abroad, pose a serious threat to the sanctity of life. Yet the Catholic News Agency reported that sources within the USCCB said Cupich “opposed the inclusion of language noting abortion as a problem with the incoming Biden administration.”  Read more here

Jesuit Priest Says Catholic Leaders ‘Contributed’ to Capitol Riots by Criticizing Democrats

Jesuit Father James Martin wrote this week that a number of Catholic bishops and priests stoked the January 6 Capitol riots by characterizing the Democratic Party as the “party of death,” for which they need to repent.

“Can anyone doubt that the moral calculus proposed by some Christian leaders, including Catholic priests and bishops, framed in the language of pure good versus pure evil, contributed to the presence of so many rioters brandishing overtly Christian symbols as they carried out their violence?” Father Martin wrote in a Jan. 12 article for America magazine titled “How Catholic Leaders Helped Give Rise to Violence at the U.S. Capitol.”

The harsh language used by certain prelates and priests to describe the Democratic Party and its pro- abortion platform can lead “to anger at pastors, division in parishes, alienation from the church, hatred of candidates and elected officials, contempt for people who belong to one party, rage over election results, despair in the future of the country and, ultimately, to violence,” wrote Father Martin, who offered the invocation for the Democratic National Convention last August.

“For if the ‘party of death’ gains power, then one must resist, by any means necessary,” he concludes. Read more here

Over 200 Priests Have Been Killed By Coronavirus In Italy

(Let’s hope that many pedophiles were among them if not ALL!)

Italy’s clergy has been hit especially hard by the world pandemic. Reports are coming in that of the nearly 80,000 COVID-related deaths in Italy, more than 200 of them were Catholic priests.

According to an article from Catholic News Agency, 200 priests died from COVID-19 in 2020. This rate has not diminished in 2021, as another 4 priests have succumbed to the illness in January. The report notes that since the beginning of the pandemic, Italian priests have died at a rate of one every day and a half.

The report goes on to note that the majority of these men were in their late 70s and 80s. The youngest priest to have died of COVID-19 in Italy was 58-year-old Fr. Alfredo Nicolardi, of the Diocese of Como.

In June Rome Reports noted that the Italian clergy was the second most affected group next to healthcare workers. They suggested that Italy’s Catholic priests were more at risk because of their age. They have also been at greater risk because they did not cease their priestly duties. Italy’s parishioners are said to be reeling from the cumulative losses. Aleteia

Pro- Abortion Pelosi Touts Catholic Credentials

A pro- abortion Democrat is touting her alleged Catholic identity.

As Congress reconvened Wednesday night after being interrupted by the massive protest on Capitol Hill, California Democrat and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi invoked Catholicism in her speech.

The House speaker noted that it was the Feast of the Epiphany, adding, “On this day of revelation, let us pray that this instigation to violence will provide an epiphany for our country to heal.”

She went on to reference St. Francis of Assisi and the song known as the “Prayer of St. Francis”:

In that spirit of healing, I evoke the song of Saint Francis. I usually do. Saint Francis is the patron saint of my city of San Francisco, and song of St. Francis is our anthem: “Lord, make me a channel of thy peace. Where there is darkness, may you bring light. Where there is hatred, let us bring love. Where there is despair, let us bring hope.”

What Pelosi was referencing is a contemporary worship song called the “Prayer of St. Francis,” which is often used during Mass in Catholic churches. Read more here, but don’t take any spiritual advice from them!

Priest accused of abetting alleged sex abuse ring hired by diocesan charity

The mother of an alleged abuse victim claims the priest broke the confidence of the confessional to warn church officials of a coming investigation.

On a scorching day in August 2015, the mother of a teenage girl walked into the confessional of a small church near the Sicilian city of Catania, in southern Italy. She believed that the leader of her lay Catholic group, a man known as the Archangel, had repeatedly raped her underage daughter and possibly others. 

She trusted the priest, the Rev. Orazio Caputo, who had worked closely with the Archangel’s Catholic Culture and Environment Association or ACCA, to listen to her fears. In the highly devout context of Sicily’s Catholic culture, the mother believed she could speak freely to her usual confessor about her growing suspicions and mounting guilt.

Two years later, the Archangel, Piero Alfio Capuana, 76, was taken into custody after a police investigation found what authorities say is credible evidence that he had sexually abused at least six underage girls. Read more here
