Vatican Cardinal Defends Raping Little Boys: ‘It Was Just Vanilla Sex’

Cardinal George Pell, found guilty of raping 13-year-old boys while he was an Archbishop, has described his sexual abuse of children as “plain vanilla sex.

Despite acknowledging the 13-year-old boys did not “volunteer” to have sex, nor were they “actively participating,” Cardinal Pell’s defense appealed for a lenient sentence by arguing that an Archbishop having sex with 13-year-old boys, against their will, is “on the low end of offending.

Cardinal George Pell, the most senior Catholic cleric ever convicted of child sexual abuse, was found guilty in December of sexually penetrating one choirboy and molesting another while he was Archbishop of Melbourne, but the verdict was not made public until yesterday.

But Robert Richter, one of Pell’s defense lawyers, drew gasps of disbelief from the court room when he attempted to convince the judge that his client’s crimes were “on the low end of offending”, describing them as “no more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration case where a child is not volunteering or actively participating”. George Pell’s trial for child sexual abuse was held in secret.

For months, journalists sat through one of the most high-profile trials held in any court in the world, without permission to report a moment of it — until now.

But you may have already heard snippets about what would have arguably been the biggest news story in Australia last year: Cardinal George Pell being found guilty of multiple child sex offences.

That’s because some international news outlets have reported for months that Australia’s most senior Catholic cleric was convicted in a Melbourne court.

But unlike ABC News, those news organisations didn’t have a journalist in the courtroom.

So why has the verdict not been reported in Australia until now?

‘A perfect storm of potential prejudice’

After Pell was committed to stand trial on numerous child sex offences, it became clear he could face two trials involving separate sets of allegations

The first case, dubbed ‘the cathedral trial’, related to when he was archbishop of Melbourne in the 1990s.

The second trial, referred to as ‘the swimmers trial’, would deal with allegations Pell had indecently assaulted two boys in a swimming pool when he was a priest in Ballarat in the 1970s.

A blanket suppression order banning reporting of Pell’s first trial was made, under a generally accepted principle that it would have been impossible for Pell to have a fair trial if the second jury was aware of the details or outcome of an earlier trial.

Dozens of similar orders are made in Victorian courts every year without controversy.

The Victorian County Court’s Chief Judge, Peter Kidd, described it as a “perfect storm of potential prejudice” against Pell that could damage his right to a fair trial.

And if the court couldn’t ensure Pell would face a fair trial, it put the second case in jeopardy.

Today, however, it was determined the second trial would not proceed.

Despite what some major Australian news outlets reported in the days following Pell’s guilty verdict, none of those outlets formally opposed the suppression order being made. Read more here

Vatican Sex Abuse Summit Dodges Homosexuality Issue

The Vatican’s summit on clerical sex abuse ended Sunday without ever confronting the strong statistical links between homosexuality and priestly abuse, confirming warnings from a number of prelates.

Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, one of the summit’s organizers and a defender of gay priests, denied any relationship between homosexuality and abuse, and dismissed claims that “homosexual people are more prone to abuse children than straight people.”

Another spokesman for the summit, Maltese Archbishop Charles Scicluna, took a similar position, stating that homosexuality does not predispose a person to sinful actions. Read more here

Pope Francis: Christians Should Not Fear Looking Like ‘Communists’

Too many Christians shy away from the social gospel, Pope Francis said Monday, because they are afraid the Church will end up looking like the communist party.

God asks us lots of uncomfortable and inconvenient questions, the pope said in his homily at morning Mass at the Santa Marta residence in the Vatican, just like he did in the garden of Eden, asking Cain, “Where is your brother?” knowing full well that Cain had killed his brother Abel.

We are all responsible for one another, Francis said, especially for the poor and needy, even though we often try to back out of this duty.

We ease our conscience a little by giving alms, as long as it does not hurt too much,” he said, because we fear that “with these social things the Church ends up looking like the communist party and this bothers us. Fine, but it was the Lord who said, ‘Where is your brother?’ Not the party, the Lord.”

God’s question is embarrassing, the pope said, and Cain’s answer is an attempt to wiggle out of the embarrassment and “escape God’s gaze,” Francis said. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” he asks.

Jesus, too, often asks embarrassing questions in the gospel, he said. He asked Peter the uncomfortable question, “Do you love me?” not once but three times, and in the end, “Peter did not know what to answer.” Jesus asked the disciples, “What do people say that I am?” but then gets more personal, saying, “But you, who do you say that I am?”

“Surely this is an embarrassing question,” Francis said. Read more of what this Idiot said here

Catholic Church sex abuse crisis: 5 possible Vatican changes

The Roman Catholic Church is holding a four-day summit in Vatican City in response to decades of sexual abuse cover-ups that have garnered renewed attention following revelations detailing extensive clergy abuse and the protection of predatory priests.

Around 200 church leaders from across the world are at the summit that began Thursday titled “The Protection of Minors in the Church.”

On opening day, Pope Francis gave introductory remarks in which he implored leaders to find ways to fight what he called “this evil afflicting the Church and humanity.”

“I wanted to consult you, patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, bishops, and religious superiors and leaders, so that together we might listen to the Holy Spirit and, in docility to his guidance, hear the cry of the little ones who plead for justice,” said the pontiff, according to a transcript provided by the Vatican.  Read more here

Pope compares child sex abuse to ‘human sacrifice’

Pope Francis on Sunday compared the sexual abuse of children to human sacrifice as he addressed the Catholic Church’s top bishops at the end of a landmark summit to tackle pedophilia.

“Our work has made us realize once again that the gravity of the scourge of the sexual abuse of minors is, and historically has been, a widespread phenomenon in all cultures and societies,” he said.

“I am reminded of the cruel religious practice, once widespread in certain cultures, of sacrificing human beings – frequently children – in pagan rites,” he added.

Francis was speaking after a four-day meeting which he had opened by calling for “concrete measures” on tackling priests and handing 114 senior bishops a roadmap to shape the debate on how to stop a global scandal.

“If in the Church there should emerge even a single case of abuse – which already in itself represents an atrocity – that case will be faced with the utmost seriousness”.

The ongoing scandals have hit countries around the world, with recent cases affecting Australia, Chile, Germany and the US.  Read more here

Pope Calls For ‘All-Out-Battle’ On Clergy Sex Abuse, With Few Specifics

Matthew 12:26 “And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?”

Wrapping up an unprecedented Vatican summit, Pope Francis denounced the abuse of minors and called for an end to the Catholic Church’s long history of covering up the scandal.

In a Mass on Sunday, he made an appeal for an “all-out battle” on clergy sex abuse but offered few specifications, reflecting broader criticisms that the four-day meeting had not produced concrete actions to hold church leaders accountable. Read more here
